Seaside to be bundled on 100$ laptop?
Ethan Zuckerman reports that the latest prototype will include three development environments: Python, Javascript and Logowiki. Well, Logowiki is written by Luke Andrews, Avi Bryant, Andrew Catton, Alan Kay and Colin Putney and runs on top of Lukas Renggli's Pier...that runs on top of Squeak Seaside.
I'm surprised "pure" Squeak is not reported to be bundled, especially given the project's educational focus, but in any case I find this to be very good news for the community.
Update 2006-06-09 09:30: this earlier and unabridged version of the same article by Ethan Zuckerman has an extra paragraph:
Given Alan Kay’s involvement with the software design, I was shocked to hear that the laptop wouldn’t be a Squeak/Smalltalk machine. Walter tells me that Alan is finding things to like in both Python and Javascript. The importance of Javascript to the machine reflects the idea that many users will be interacting with the machine primarily through a web browser - Javascript is a particularly rewarding language to learn when you’re focused on the browser.
Mmm, so are the using Logowiki simply as a logo/javascript prototyping environment or as a way to sneak Squeak "on board"?
Update 2006-06-09 10:46 After a bit of digging around it looks like Squeak is not officially supported, but on the other hand, not out of the picture all together. Time will tell I guess.
